IT WAS SO SWEET OF HIM

David Fenster

Mehera was given another honor one day. Baba's devotees had aways referred to his headquarters as Arangaon, the name of the nearby village. Baba brought up the subject with Padri, Gustadji, and Masaji, stating that he wished the place to have a different, distinct name, and asked for suggestions.

He himself settled on Meherabad. He then came to the Post Office verandah, where Mehera was working with Naja, Daulatmai, and Small Khorshed, and said to the women, "You know, I've given this place the name Meherabad." He turned to Mehera and added, "I've named it after you."

Mehera was surprised and happy. Although the name is a combination of Meher and abad (flourishing, or made prosperous, by Meher), Baba wanted her to know that her name was included, as well. "When you say it fast, it does sound like Mehera-bad. It was so sweet of him. Baba was always witty and liked to give us a happy surprise, something fun and startling."
