HEART TALK - Chanji's Diary - Fifth Installment

The morning row - over certain suggestion of Shree--

At about 7:15 AM Shree called Dear Vishnu in the kitchen, and there 
discussed about the tone of the magazine, which to Shree's opinion 
seemed rather "fighting" - and which Shree distinctly disliked and 
disapproved. Now - altho' the editor of the magazine was virtually Mr. 
Dastur, people outside would all take this to be Shree's own.

They would not care to think of the actual situation here - Shree's 
absolute aloofness from its working, either in writings or pecuniary 
management, except his contribution of a nice lecture, every issue. To 
make matter quite clear, as also to enable Mr. Dastur to write freely. 
Thus to avoid any troubles arising out of "yes" "no" in future, Shree 
thought of a splendid plan - to give a new additional explanation, 
making it quite clear to the public that Shree had nothing absolutely 
to do with it except contributing a lecture every issue. A nice 
draught [draft] in vernacular was made out, making everything clear -- 
and sent to Mr. Dastur for getting it translated into English - but 
oh! - The row that followed! "It is absurd - it is ridiculous - I 
can't come now hasi thashe [I would become the laughing stock] and so 
on and so on" were the bitter words Shree had to hear - and had to 
hold back and leave it!

But afterwards, fortunately, the hot brains being cooled down, it was 
typed - at first, a cold passage just to persuade Shree, who 
disapproved saying, "leave it - do as you please - no necessity" --- 
and then after some time, another better and clear passage was written 
and typed out and Vishnu was specially sent to Nagar to arrange for 
that - if possible on a separate coloured slip.

The New Circular - Bua Saheb, all-in-all (like Bada Saheb)
According to the discussions, and arrangements previously made, Bua 
Saheb was henceforth considered to be the all-in-all (like Bada Sahib) 
with all administrative powers, and a Circular to that affect was 
taken round.

The "Chalti" Hava [prevailing winds of changing events] - was everyday 
holding new victims, for being packed off. Certain members and 
families had to go - only selected Mandali and boys to remain.

The "sweeping off" work was carried on with all vigour - those who had 
to go - passing off one by one.
