HEART TALK - Chanji's Diary - Second Installment
============================
Ho! Ho! Halt!
Why should we close, at all? What is it that necessitates its closing?
Let us remove that cause if we can. If it was the question of the
running expense. Buasaheb suggested 500 a month would be sufficient,
and undertook to manage that, if the number of the Mandali and boys be
reduced to about 40 boys, 25 Mandali - contract given. The ashram was
thus kept, but with the reduction of Mandali and boys. Buasaheb was
asked to manage all this affair-- to sort out names of those quite
necessary, willing working, and wishing to stay, and to ask other less
useful Mandali to "pack off" families to march off.
What a beginning on the New Year's day! God forbid, the 364 days to
follow would not be so gloomy!
Meetings and discussion between Baba and Buasaheb, and B. Sab w/ Kakh
and others, were frequent. The "sweeping off" work started. It was
indeed an unpleasant task for Buasaheb to ask the Mandali and boys to
go - He was in search of some sound, solid, substantial reason or
excuse. What should I say to all, what reason should I give -- was the
main puzzle now running in his mind. With his hands on the big
mustache, eyes narrowed (chuchi) [squinted] - his typical pose - he
tried to think, and think much, but all in vain!
