HEART TALK - More Original Letters: Ninth Letter

A 1940 letter from Chanji to Baba, who was traveling with the
women's group in the Blue Bus and cars, along the Eastern
coast of India, on their way back to Meherabad.

The "goods wagons" refers to railway freight cars, which had
been reserved to move all the Bangalore ashram property to
Meherabad.

The bottom portion of page one has been cut off, but it refers
to Pilamai, of Karachi, who had come to stay with the women's
group in Bangalore in March of that year. Her daughter, Silla,
was traveling with Baba and the group.

Some adjustments have been made for clarity. The original
can be seen by clicking the link:

Bangalore, April 6

Dear Baba,

Dr. Gani arrived here yesterday morning.

1. We had been to the Railway office yesterday to make
inquiries and everything so far has been arranged. The two
goods wagons will be loaded on the 13th.

Good [Baba's comment]

2. The Ex-Station Mysore of the Mysore station came here
yesterday with his son as ordered. He was asked to meditate
for five minutes in your hut, as instructed, explained and given
your message. He left requesting me to send further
instructions, if any, with regard to the boy.

No further instruction [Baba's comment, in Nilu's handwriting]

3. One Sadhu Venkatadas (from Nagpur), who had been
writing to you and whom you had agreed to keep here for
board and lodging, but provided he asked or expected no
monitary help, arrived here yesterday morning with the
expectation of staying here. But we couldn't keep him without
your orders and told him so, asking him to make his own
arrangements until at least we received a reply from you. But
he left rather irritated murmuring that he will have to commit
suicide etc. Then he came again in the afternoon, apologetic,
asking me not to mind what he said in desperation in the
morning, and requesting me to write to you about him, which I
promised and he left. He said he had made some
arrangements for his board and lodging somewhere and will
be calling for a reply on Wednesday 10th. He seems rather
unbalanced, besides suffering from chronic malaria, (as he
himself repeatedly told us), to which I beg to draw your
attention. I could have avoided him with vague replies, but
taking pity on his condition and considering your acceptance of
his request to stay with you here, I have to write and inform
you about him, and am now awaiting your reply.

He can't see me till 20th May at Meherabad so arrange for him
as you like, or send him away if mad or ill [Baba's comment, in
Nilu's handwriting]

4. The land-lord of the "Links" was very displeased that we
had removed fittings in the bungalow without informing him (as
was agreed in the terms of the Lease) as also for other small
breakages and repairs. He wouldn't have cared for the petty
repairs and other things, but the removal of this tub which he
had fixed with great difficulty for finding a level in that awkward
place and the removal of the pipes etc. in your room
downstairs, both these being done by raw hands and rather
roughly causing damage which might involve him in expenses
which he grudges, besides the annoyance of doing all this
removal without informing him, irritated him much. I had a long
talk with him and have tried my best to explain, that seems to
have passified him and he has for the time agreed not to mind
petty repairs, but if it amounts to more, he will submit a bill
(although that seems unlikely).

Always hope for the best [Baba's comment, in Nilu's handwriting]

M.S. Irani [Baba's handwriting]

[Pilamai says] to write and tell you how she feels deeply for the
deep debt of gratitude for all you have done for her and helped
her out of the situation etc. Nothing particular besides, except
a slight reference about her daughter SILLA's birthday, on
Thursday the 11th. When she requests you to give her
daughter your blessings, besides special darshana. I will
attend to other petty details about letters to her family and
relatives in Karachi.

All else is O.K. Baidul and the animals and Eruch and the
masts all fare quite well.

With loving pranams from self and all.

Chanji
