HEART TALK - Donkin's Diaries: Twenty-second Installment

31/1/41

I got back to Jaipur last Monday, and told Baba about my interview at
Hyderabad; he wants me to come as far as Quetta where he has decided
to go at the end of February with the ladies. So we leave here on Feb
25th by bus and car for Quetta, taking 15 days over the 1500 mile
trip. Baba says it's very unlikely I'll get called up before we reach
Quetta.

As he goes off for 2 weeks to South and East India on Feb 5th I asked
him if there were any special orders to me if I went while he was
away.

Only 3 orders; no fasting or anything - but no lustful action,
communication with Baba twice a month giving address, and when things
reach a climax and Baba writes me or wires me to come, I must come at
once, without permission of authorities if necessary. He says I am to
be with him when he speaks - I do hope this will be so - though with
Baba's promises one can never tell.

Tomorrow I go off with Baba to Alwar, about 100 miles off, for mast
business, with a few others, and in two days Baba bathes, feeds, and
touches feet of 50 down and outs from Jaipur. A lawyer and journalist
here are to help, who are interested in Baba.

Baba the other day gave a talk on worldly mad, God-mad and masts.

All three behave rather in the same way and only a master can tell the
differences by special signs in each.

Worldly mad go mad from shock, money, women etc and such worldly
troubles.

God-mad, through too much study and thinking about religion and God, go
mad for this reason, they are mostly on planes 1 and 2. God-mad are
not conscious of the planes.

Masts are on planes 3, 4, 5, mostly on 3 and 5. They are unconscious of
the world, the planes, and themselves, and are drunk, (intoxicated)
with love of God.

On 5th plane there are 3 types:- Mast-Vali-Majzoob.

Mast on 5th sees neither world, nor self, nor planes, and is drowned in
the planes.

On 6th plane the same thing occurs, but only Vali and Majzoob, no Mast
on 6th plane.

The 6th plane Vali is conscious of world, planes and himself, and longs
for God.

The 6th plane Majzob is unconscious of planes, himself and world and is
drowned in the planes.

A Master sees clearly the differences of all three types.

Baba during the last few days is in very good mood, teasing all, and
joking with all.

He says Italy will suffer worse than France, and India will have bad
times.

23/2/41

Baba went off for15 days with Gustadji, Kaka, and Jal Kerawala,
contacting masts in Delhi, Calcutta, Benares, Puri Madras and Ramnad.
Now he has finished the mast business.

In Delhi he was very happy because he contacted the spiritual chargeman
of Delhi, an old naked man who lies on the steps of the Jama Masjid -
the big mosque there.

Baba returned on 18th Feb; looked very tired and thin after 15 nights
on 3rd class trains, but has picked up now and looks O.K.

I am at last called up, and go to Poona on March 1st, and so cannot
drive the bus round to Quetta as planned: I am free of most orders on
joining up, but have 3 special orders to obey.

Baba very chatty and gay now; Pendu and Rusi arrived from Quetta last
night and this morning long discussions re Quetta plans. Quetta full
of troops - all civilians may have to leave at 24 hours notice; if
this happens Baba will stay in Quetta, and the ladies go down to
Karachi, where Baba is already arranging about a bungalow.

Bangalore 19/5/41

No entry for so long because I've not, alas, been with Baba. On leaving
Baba told me he was 100% with me, and that I should not be harmed in
the war, because I belonged to him.

It was a wrench leaving Baba, but I am lucky in having been sent here
to Bangalore. I am in charge of a hospital for Italian Prisoners of
War, as I know Italian language.

Baba sends me messages occasionally through Nilu, teasing messages,
which I enjoy a lot.

The other day Adi went up from here to Ahmednagar and got a letter
telling him to go to Sakori to Upasni Maharaj. The message Baba sent
to Maharaj was secret, but it was about meeting sometime, soon or not
we don't know. Perhaps then the great meeting will come off soon,
which will forerun Baba's manifestation and Upasni's death.

Adi very overcome meeting Upasni, weeping a lot: Upasni said that
suffering with a Master brings spiritual fruit, while suffering in the
world is just suffering and bears no fruit worth having.

He also said he was like a husk, all empty and lifeless, all his
spirituality he had given to Baba. So doubtless we shall see what
happens soon.

I don't like this army job at all, too much red tape and all; Italian
quite good now, though.

However I'm lucky to be here in Bangalore and not to have lost touch
with the Mandali entirely, with Adi, Ghani, Sidhu etc here. Sidhu's
son died the other day, not recovering from coma after epileptic fit,
unconscious for 5 days.

Baba said he was a 2nd incarnation of the Arjun of Bombay,
Manzil-e-Meem, who has gone back to Baba again.

23/7/41 Bangalore

Ghani, Eruch and myself went off to Ahmednagar leaving here on Sunday
morning, reaching Nagar Monday morning.

As soon as we got to Meherabad, and had a bit of breakfast Baba called
me up the hill.

It was good to see Baba again after so long; a couple of hours with him
after 4 months absence is a real treat.

Ramju and Sarosh had also been called. Baba said he had called us
because during the next 6 months seclusion he might die, so he had
given us this last chance of seeing him. If he died he said that all
of us would die soon too, as there would be no point in our living
then.

If however he did not die, he would speak and manifest, and we should
"pass our examination. "

He said his illness had already begun, as the previous day he had had
great heart pains, so bad that he couldn't move for 1/2 hour or so -
all the ladies were very frightened.

His really strict seclusion begins on August 1st for 2 1/2 months, till
15th October he will be at Meherabad: after that he will probably go
and continue his seclusion at Panchgani.

He is to be in the Mast ashram on the hill at Meherabad, no-one to see
him, Vishnu only to go up for orders etc and Baba will be behind a
screen, not to be seen by Vishnu. No-one to go near the place; a
system of 2 bells Padri is fixing up for leaving food etc. Baidul who
is up there is to keep silent, and no-one to see Baba at all.

Apparently he always said years ago that before he spoke he would
nearly die, and that his body would be distorted: so maybe he really
is going to speak soon, perhaps next February.

Baba also gave us a little talk about how Reality was infinite, and
illusion infinite, that illusion was infinitely divided up and the one
truth was in each bit of illusion, but owing to the infinite
multiplicity of illusion the truth in things was very small, but
always there.

Behind all our actions is egoism, mind, emotion etc, behind Baba's
actions is the Infinite Truth. Both actions outwardly appear the same,
eating, sleeping, getting angry etc, but there is this great
difference, of God behind Baba's actions, egoism behind ours.

Talking of another matter Baba said half joking that to him, all who
were not God Realized were mad.

Baba ordered me to write out clearly our alternative diet to the milk
diet fixed for next January or February, which I did, though I am let
off this fast, being in the army.

Adi was sent by Baba to see Upasni. Upasni says he wants to die: as he
has to die before Baba speaks perhaps he will soon.

Upasni is also going into seclusion soon.

Baba ordered me to write him two letters before August 1st, and then
stop writing like the others, as not even telegrams are allowed,
except in cases of life and death.

Adi, Eruch and I left Meherabad on Monday night, Ghani went on to
Poona, and I got back to Bangalore this morning, feeling rather
depressed but it's been wonderful seeing Baba anyhow.
