HEART TALK - Donkin's Diaries: Nineteenth Installment

Oct 25th 1940

Baba still pressing forward plans for Ceylon. Elizabeth takes her car.
- The big bus, which I am to drive in Ceylon. This transport of cars
to Ceylon is costing Rs 2000 and more. As yet my military permit to
leave India has not yet come, but hope it will in a few days.

Shariat Khan leaves tomorrow so that now only Mohammed and Chatty Baba
remain and they will come with us to Ceylon.

An odd tale or two about the so-called 'Bau' [Bhoot] or presence of
suicides: it appears that if a man kills himself, he has to hang about
the earth plane and re-incarnate again to play off his sanskaras.

At night when Baba sleeps the Bau [Bhoot], or King spirit, steps within
the boundary of the Sadguru's territory, which is 9 miles radius, and
when he gets near the Sadguru, he materializes, and touches the
sleeping body of the Sadguru, and pleads for re-incarnation, but the
presence of a waking man keeps him away; he cannot touch a man, which
is above him in evolution.

So when Baba sleeps he often makes someone sit awake by him all night,
with orders on no account to move away.

One night Chanji did move away, while on watch, because of an attack of
diarrhoea. But he no sooner left the room and got outside than Baba
came up to him v. angry, and asked him why he 'left' him: he told
Chanji he might have died. Apparently if the Bau [Bhoot] does show
himself he is of terrifying aspect, but quite harmless.

In Manzil-e-Meem in Bombay queer noises at night of a man in passages -
someone slapping a stick in the yard - but if one turned on the light
no-one was there - Baba used to say that 'Bau' [Bhoot] was around at
such times.

Also some years ago Baba used to be in partial seclusion up the hill,
occasionally he would say that he must attend a meeting of masters: he
used to lock himself in his hut, no-one to look in the windows, no-one
to disturb on any pretext whatever; 10 minutes later he would come out
and all would be over.

Because I couldn't get an answer to request for permit to go to Ceylon
Baba ordered me to go to Poona last Sunday night, and get leave if
possible for 3 months, or 2, or at least 1 month to go to Ceylon.

After a lot of trouble I managed to get permit to go to Ceylon until
January 1st 1941; I had to phone Delhi twice to get that result
through. Baba told me I had to come to Ceylon for various reasons, and
so no doubt it was only because of his will that permit was given as
now doctors are being called due to war spreading.

Baba made a few remarks about the war; he said soon Japan, Burma,
Singapore, Iran, Turkey, will all be involved.

The crisis in West is nearing its climax and the crisis in the East and
India will begin in January 1941, until middle 1941 when it will begin
to wane.

Mussolini will eventually be killed violently, Hitler will commit
suicide; though Hitler, Baba said, is his star villain. Russia is very
crafty, she helps everyone, and in the end will pinch everything,
Iran, Afghanistan.

Both Russia and Japan want India, but won't succeed.

India will suffer more than the West, 50% population wiped off, all
this next year starting.

Britain will be crushed, but won't give in, and won't lose: Germany and
Italy will be crushed and lose.

England would have been wiped out except for Churchill, he is real
clever, and if old Chamberlain had been Prime Minister, England would
have been finished. Churchill, Baba said, has saved England.

To-day we set out for Ceylon, leaving 5:00 pm train, 2nd class, a
tedious journey but should be interesting, the bus and Elizabeth's car
have gone ahead by train: I am to drive the bus in Ceylon.

Baba says the army will take Meherabad for the next period, as in last
war - he says they may have all the buildings and land except the dome
building and the little hut next to the dome.

Baba is now buying land the other side of Ahmednagar, near the tank
which supplies Nagar with water on the route to Happy Valley.

The next entry in this diary will probably be in Ceylon, after what
sort of journey we shall see.
